Storybook Project

Our Storybook Project keeps imprisoned mothers connected with their children through the simple act of recording stories in their own voices. Through these recordings, mothers can love, comfort and encourage their children - even when they cannot be at home.

Each month, volunteers visit Auckland Women’s Prison with a box of books and recording equipment. Mothers choose a story to read aloud, and both the recording and the book are sent to their children.

For many mums, using their voices to read strengthens their determination to change. As one mother reflected: “Reading a story out loud for my daughter to hear reminded me I’m still her mum. It gave me hope.” A recorded bedtime story may seem small - but small things matter. They keep families connected, and with connection comes hope.

"Children miss out. They miss their mums. They miss the sound of her voice. The voice that many of them have known all their lives grows quiet. And for some, it disappears."
